How It Works
Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) applied to 92.35% of your net self-employment income. The 92.35% factor approximates the employer-half deduction. You can deduct half of your SE tax from gross income when calculating income tax. Quarterly estimated payments (Form 1040-ES) are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15.
